Life Coaching

What is life coaching?

The definition of life coaching or personal coaching is "helping people to achieve goals". What this means is that the life coach provides specific services to help the coaching client with overall life improvement. Coaching programs can be developed to help individuals with personal life goals such as career advancement and improving health and lifestyle or can be applied to more specific problem areas such as stress and anxiety or managing a significant life transition. Life coaching programs can also be designed to help couples to improve communication, intimacy and closeness in their relationship.

How is life coaching different than therapy?

Both life coaching and therapy are models to help people make positive changes in their lives. However there is a difference in the way therapists and coaches typically approach the issues of motivation and change with their clients. The therapist's job is to assist the client therapeutically in improving their life and in more traditional therapy this has taken the form of helping the client to develop insight into internal issues and blocks. The coach's job is to assist the client motivationally in overcoming blocks and achieving goals. Therapy is generally more unstructured whereas coaching usually takes a more structured approach and is specifically concerned with helping clients to set clear goals and to take action steps towards those goals.

How are the three coaching programs structured?

Life coaching seems to be most effective when there is a clear structure to the coaching sessions. To this end, all three coaching programs have been designed to have 10 weekly steps, broken down into two 5 step programs. These program steps are outlined in a motivational workbook for each coaching program. The coaching workbook contains weekly educational material, questions to answer and specific exercises and strategies that will facilitate the goal development and attainment process. Clients may only sign up for the initial 5 sessions of the coaching program, but are encouraged to complete the full 10 session program for maximum benefit. Coaching clients who are in a structured program find that they are more motivated to follow through and do the necessary work to attain their goals.

What can I expect in a typical coaching session?

The individual coaching session may involve the client(s) talking about the events (successes and challenges) of the past week and may also involve completing the assigned writing and experiential exercises partially or in full during the coaching session itself. These questions and exercises can also be utilized as homework assignments and completed at home by the individual or couple. Coaching sessions are approximately 50 minutes in duration.
